Ok I am a big hardware and perfomance guy. I dont like to have to look at the box and see if my computer will run something. I want to snag it off the shelf with confidence, knowing that my computer will not only run it, it will laugh at it. In school we work on Imac's, which are impressive machines to be sure, fast, steady and reliable. I was originally impressed enough with them to consider buying one, I got jazzed out on the resolution of the display, which was crystal clear and vibrant. I priced these at Apple, and heres what I got.
Intel core I5 ($200 upgrade)
4 gigs of DDR 3 Ram
ATI Radeon HD 5670 video with 500mb DDR
1TB SATA 7200rpm hard drive
Thats the meat and potatoes of the system, and it prices out at a whopping 1599.00 plus shipping and tax, and comes with a magic mouse and keyboard of course. Its also not portable. Now granted, Apple has a great reputation for stability, reliability and customer service. But that being said, lets talk about Asus.
I have been an Asus baby ever since I built my first computer back in '01. I love thier inovation, reliability, quality, and dedication to performance. I have owned an Asus G50v laptop for over two years now and the only problem I have had with it was a bad thermal unit, and that was a $35.00 fix. Other than that I am on this computer constantly, and its never failed. Now I am looking to add to my arsenal with another computer so I can really start to hammer out the things I want to get going. So I took a look at the latest and greatest Asus laptop, and here is what I found in the same price bracket.
Asus G73JH-X3
Intel core i7 (quad core)
8 gigs of DDR3 1333mhz ram
ATI Radeon HD 5870 with 1gig of DDR5 memory
2x 320gig SATA 7200rpm hard drives
Again, the meat and potatoes. I will mention that it is a 17.5 inch widescreen with a native full HD resloution of 1920x1080. The only thing that the Asus laptop doesnt beat out over the Imac is the storage, which I dont care about anyways. I can get a 1TB external if I am that desperate for storage.
Other than that, its got better processing power, double the system memory, and better video with twice the memory as well. As far as asthetics goes, the thing looks like a stealth fighter, with a matte black finish and dual cooling vents to the rear. (yay Asus! thanks for removing the blistering device by my left hand!) Now...the price. Im sure your expecting it to be the same price, maybe just a little more, but actually, I priced this monster at $1499.00. A full $100 cheaper than the Imac. Considering the reliability of Asus, I definitely have one thing to say. I'll take it!
